The Client

Bristol Myers Squibb PRI (Pharmaceutical Research Institute) 

BMS is a global pharmaceutical and health care products company. With 19.2 billion dollars in sales, it is ranked 110 in the Fortune Global 500. One of the top 10 pharmaceutical companies in the world, it has 42,000 employees worldwide, and invests 2.7 billion dollars every year in research and development.

The Challenge

Due to the company’s ongoing commitment to research into specific disease areas of global impact, it was necessary to upgrade the existing laboratories and associated areas within the Clinical Trials Building, and therefore upgrade all of the mechanical services to suit the new criteria.  Certain challenges were presented in regards to access due to personnel restrictions and the first floor location of the work area.

The Solution

The project commenced with the removal of all existing redundant plant and remodeling of the existing services, prior to the installation of new plant and infrastructure.

The works comprised the installation of new chiller plant and pipe work to duct mounted cooling coils, new supply and extract air handling units, new ductwork systems, extending the existing heating system, new de-humidifier plant, and the installation of a new BMS network to operate and monitor both the new and existing plant. 

TKR overcame the access challenges by breaking up everything that needed to be removed, and converting all new plant, pipe work, ductwork etc into sections, to fit through the entrance, and undertaking work during specific hours only, including weekends.  The use of a telescopic crane enabled the installation of the new chiller plant, and the entire project was carried out whilst all existing service that were not in need of modification were kept live.

Upgrading facilities to achieve the highest specification possible, is vital to the R&D work undertaken by BMS, so TKR worked hard to overcome the various challenges presented by the project to complete it within time, as well as providing high quality design and installation to achieve the required specification.
